The extent to which the law protects the use of medical marijuana in Colorado is precarious and complex. Colorado law gives a patient who has been issued a Medical Marijuana Registry identification card to possess:
(a) No more than two (2) ounces of a usable form of marijuana, and (b)no more than six (6) marijuana plants, with three (3) or fewer being mature, flowering plants that are producing a usable form of marijuana.
However, patients or their caregivers may be able to grow more if they can prove that the greater amount of marijuana is necessary for their particular medical condition. Moreover, in some circumstances a patient without a Medical Marijuana registry card may be allowed to possess marijuana, if they have received a doctor's recommendation.
